My Digital Story

My digital story is about my personal journey, and a journey within that journey.  I've had my share of diffculties in life, but they have been instrumental in determining the success of my future.  It's been one heck of a ride so far!

My digital story serves many purposes.  First of all, it raises awareness of a social issue in a small way by shedding light on the problems I dealt with as a young child.  Many people struggle through the same problems and feel very alone.   My openness about my personal struggles might help show someone else that they are not alone.  I also think my story serves to show a different side of a stereotype.  I have seen tough times as a child, but I was able to use that for good.  I am driven to help young people who have been through similar ordeals.

I found these common core standards.  I decided to choose from standards for 6th grade speaking and listening standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.5
Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, images, music, sound) and visual displays in presentations to clarify information.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.6
Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. (See grade 6 Language standards 1 and 3 for specific expectations.)

  1. I enjoyed the storyline connected with biking and your travels and learning experiences along the way. I too have had sad times with alcoholism in my family, but the source was father. I thought your writing was good and kept me interested. The music was appropriate too. Nicely done!

  2. What an inspiring message Jessica! Full of metaphor and metonymy. Thank you for sharing your story with us. What you have learned a long the way was not an easy path but one that can be shared and hopefully help many, especially your students.

  3. The best thing about your story is clearly the adventurous bike trip that changed your life.
I would like to know more about how long the entire trip took.
One thing you should think about changing is cropping out the long pause that is in the middle of your video.
Another good thing about your story is how the story connects to your life as it is now.

  4. Jessica, "Still a work in progress" aren't we all and this video helps remind us that even in life's adversity we find beautiful memories that last a lifetime. The very special thing about these vivid memories is what we continue to learn from them. From the "wide water" to understanding what it means to persevere and ultimately overcome with the ability to see awe inspiring beauty is truly what life's journey should be about. Thanks for sharing your story!
